So what happens? I order my plates on MyPlates.com & then what? What happens to the current registration? Is it lost if I paid for more than 1 year? Is it converted or something?

I'm guessing I still have to pay the annual $60 for the vehicle registration in addition to the vanity plate purchase fee, correct?

What happens if the vehicle registration hasn't expired yet? Is it best to purchase a vanity plate after registration expires?

Anyone have experience with vanity plates in this state?

I've had mine for several years, so I don't recall all the details about initially getting the plates. But I do know that you do have to pay an additional fee when you register your car every year--I just renewed mine and it was $40 for the personalized, and another $30 for my horned lizard (Keep Texas Wild) plate. I think some of that fee goes towards conservation. Remember that you can keep your plates forever, as long as you pay the fee each year. I transferred mine to a new car a couple of years ago without a problem. And if they get damaged, you can get new ones made.

I've been trying to remember about the registration. I think what happens is that you do have to get a new window sticker(that shows the new license plate), but I think it expires the same time as your previous sticker, so you don't pay twice. I must rest now. All this thinkin's made my brain hurt!

IIRC you registration is updated so that it will match the month when you plate comes in and you pay the a pro-rated amount.
