Your average Greek diner Cheeseburger DeLuxe is superior to either. IMO of course.

I'm not a native Texan or Californian and I tried both and strongly prefer In n Out to Whataburger

In-'n-Out burgers are OK, fries are terrible. Eating their french fries is like chewing on cardboard, no wander they have "secret" menu items such as "animal style" fries in order to cover up the tasteless fries.

This is a long thread so pardon me if I’ve already posted this. I went to the In-N-Out in New Braunfels, which looked to be brand spanking new, and I hate to say it but it was so much better than the Whataburger near my house. There were probably way more employees than necessary, but they all seemed pretty happy and friendly. I really liked it. My daughter has tried the one in Austin too and she said it wasn’t nearly as good as the one we had in New Braunfels, so I suppose they have their consistency issues as well.

If you happen to find a well run Whataburger, they do make great burgers and their menu is more varied. I just haven’t been to a really good Whataburger in a long time.

I guess I'll leave this to folks who actually like and eat fast food hamburgers. Eat, drink and be merry!

Animal style fries.. mmmm.. I don't care if the fries by themselves are bland when I rarely order them that way anymore.

This is a classic argument. I'm a native Texan and there's only two things I like at Whataburger - the patty melt and the honey butter chicken biscuit. I've always felt that everything on their menu is, for lack of a better expression, terrible. In N Out from the burger perspective is far, far better. I don't really like french fries anyway so that doesn't enter into my calculus when comparing these two.

I will take the Whataburger Patty Melt over In-N-Out's Double Double any day. The Double Double and Patty Melt are roughly equally enjoyable for me but at least, on the topic of fast food, the Patty Melt is more unique. Yeah, the Double Double is better than a McDonalds Big Mac or Quarter Pounder but it isn't that much better in my opinion compared to some of its other generic fast food burger competition.
