You know, I understand what y'all are saying about people going to do that sort of stuff anyway so why not bring in the casinos? Very true, they most certainly will find a way anyway. But I think the point is that we don't want it in our own backyard, know what I mean? I love to visit Vegas myself, hubby likes the blackjack tables and I just play the slots a little bit, but I'm glad it's out there in another state and not here.

I have never liked gambling. I watched the Southern California area become overrun by Indian Casinos and am very appreciative that they aren't here.

You know, actually, I could care less if they open some casinos outside of some towns. What I hate is the advertising. I'm not sure I ever actually saw a casino in California, but something like 5-10% of the ads on TV in my area were for the various casinos. If they could make it like cigarettes, so that they couldn't advertise on TV, I wouldn't vote against a couple here and there in out of the way areas.

I frequent liquor stores, but I wouldn't want to live next to one, either. (No matter how convenient...)

Why? Because I'm responsible about and others aren't.

Same with gambling. I don't want to find the poor sap in my backyard who blew his brains out after losing the rent money.

That's why I say build an oasis in the desolate area of West Texas. That way it is out of the backyard. Casino City...out in the middle of nowhere. I'm only thinking about the huge amount of revenue it would bring to the state. I don't care anything about gambling.

Another Las Vegas? Yuck! Why not build casinos in a Sunset Strip in a major city instead?

I think may 5 or 6 spread out over the state would be good. One up in the Panhanle, another in the Hill country, another down on Padre Island, maybe one in Galveston and one near Austin.

Well, because the people of Texas do not want these casinos to be in their city in the first place and that is why it was voted down...the crime, the sin that comes with it. To solve that problem...make it its own city out in the boonies where people, for the most part, have to travel to get to it. I wouldn't want the casino in my backyard, either. It's just that it would bring a lot of money to the state's coffers. It should be only in one outlying area within the state, not mini casinos in different cities.

That's one thing I liked about moving to Texas many years ago....my little town was dry. Well, it isn't anymore and that is too bad. Actually it was quite a few years ago that it went wet. I hope they don't bring casinos to Texas as there is enough already wrong. If Texans want to gamble and not have to drive, maybe a move is in order if they can swing it.

Hey, why are y'all trying to foist this on West Texas? Put it near Laredo so if there's an increase in crime, no one will notice anyway (or they can blame it on illegal immigrants!)

Two different companies tried doing gambling cruises from South Padre Island/Port Isabel. They didn't last very long -- I guess they didn't have enough steady business. The greyhound track in Harlingen went under, too, and reopened a few years later just offering limited, simulcast races. I don't know if it's still open.

Moreover, the airline that offered regular flights to Las Vegas from Abilene left the airport, due to lack of business. I honestly don't think that gambling is a big thing in Texas. Would I go to a casino? Yeah, maybe once or twice to check it out but the change in laws, the infrastructure needed, and maintenance of casinos requires a regular flood of hard-core gamblers to make it financially worthwhile. I don't think we've got that. LOL, and thank God for it!
