I think Governor Good hair is a blowhard attempting to appeal to the worst of his constituents, for nothing other than what he perceives as the good of Rick Perry, certainly not the good of the state or the country. But, what's new? Thus it has always been, and thus it will apparently always be.

That's whether or not I think the health care reform law is a good thing. The topic doesn't matter, his response is always the same.

Perry was talking about Medicaid, not Medicare.

Medicaid is a welfare handout--Medicare is not, as beneficiaries pay premiums every month.

Let's see:

After the governor's decision Texans will continue to pay medicaid taxes to the Federal government to the tune of billions of dollars per year. However instead of all that money coming back to the state in the form of medicaid expansion, it will simply get spent in other states or remain in Federal coffers. Essentially Perry is taking tens of billions of dollars per year that will be paid by Texans in the form of Federal taxes and lighting it on fire instead of allowing it to be spent at home. Or, more accurately, he's letting California and New York spend it.

Meanwhile the poor who would have benefited from the program will still continue to clog the state's emergency rooms and hospitals. Except instead of medicaid paying for their care, the rest of us will be doing it ourselves through higher insurance premiums and hospital costs. Next time your health insurance premiums in Texas skyrocket you will have your governor to thank.

Yep, smart move gov.

ill start by saying im a former republican turned independant. i hold a ton of conservative values with some liberal. i Moderator cut: Off-Topic believe healthcare should be available for everyone.

however.

our governer is just that. Moderator cut: language that says anyone in his position that runs for president should vacate his/her current job. did he? Moderator cut: language

sometimes, i wish someone would chuck a shoe at him.

The states had no choice on Medicare because it is a strictly FEDERAL program and doesn't involve state jurisdiction at all. Medicaid is a combined state-federal program, and it certainly may be that some states dragged their feet on Medicaid implementation. At one time Medicaid was a sizeable part of my private practice in Austin, and it isn't just a welfare handout. It covers, for example, all children who are in state foster care -- I don't think one should really deem that a welfare handout: those are kids who have been removed from their natural homes due to serious physical abuse, sexual abuse, and/or severe neglect. I also saw some Medicare patients. Interestingly, Medicaid in Texas actually paid higher than did Medicare for psychological services (psychotherapy, psychiatric diagnostic interview, psychological testing, etc).
