a liberal in Waco? at Baylor? (San Antonio, Austin: school, university, live)

Hey everybody. I am somebody who would definitely be defined as liberal, although I prefer to think of it more as being open-minded than anything. Essentially my view on life is that anybody can do anything they want as long as everybody involved consents. I don't go to church (but am deeply spiritual) and don't view anything wrong whatsoever with premarital or homosexual sex. I was also a big Clinton (and Gore) supporter and just do not like Bush.

I have lived almost my entire life on the West Coast (including San Francisco), although I have lived small parts of my life in West Michigan and East Tennessee, two pretty conservative places, so I might know, generally speaking, what to expect in a place like Waco. I have been all over the South from my job in Tennessee (Louisiana to Kentucky, Arkansas to Florida) but only have two experiences in Texas - several days in San Antonio and an Amtrak trip across the state from El Paso to Louisiana.

Okay, with that said, I am interviewing for a job at Baylor. Would I be miserable in Waco or is it a big enough city that I should be able to find some people with similar viewpoints (or at least people with opposing viewpoints who are open minded enough to accept mine)?

If you are a young professional you will find Waco very lacking in fun.

Most professors are on the liberal side at Baylor. But regrettably, they have had a real resurgence of fundamentalism in the administration. David Lyle Jeffrey will ask you about your "walk with Christ" and all sorts of nonsense.

Guys, Baylor is a private Christian school. LOL at the "David Lyle Jeffrey will ask you about your "walk with Christ" and all sorts of nonsense" quote! Uh, yeah, that is a legitimate question for a Baptist university. I don't think they want to hire an atheist/agnostic/Wiccan/whatever to teach theology and promote free sex, love and anything-goes. They can teach, do and ask what they please. Why try to change it? Would you want a conservative, Southern Baptist professor teaching at ___________(fill in the blank with a liberal, God-hating school like Berkley)?

I would not even go to the interview.

Thanks for the responses. Just wanted to let you know that I never got a call back even though my phone interview sounded very promising, and they offered the job to somebody else. Well, maybe it's for the best considering my political and religious leanings.

I always think it's funny how some people just don't get what "private" institution means. Nonsense to some, maybe, but not to the folks that go there and not to the staff. Thank God we have such a wonderful university system in this country. We can actually pick and choose where we wish to go to school. Thank God we're not all the same, and thank God all college professors are not liberal atheists.

Wouldn't it be a boring world if everything were all the same and we all received the same perspective?

yes and Waco is also one of the poorest cities in Texas..I would try Austin...keepin weird.
