That's the STARTING projections. As people grow used to having that option ridership should reflect it.
No worries.

Even if that's the starting projection, it's still a low figure. DART needs to worry about making their ridership numbers better in a lot of stations.

Also, just to point out something, though DART's light rail is about 4 times longer than Metro's, Dart only has about a little more than twice the stations.

The fact DFW is now connected to downtown via rail = MAJOR selling point to convention planners. Add to this the plan for the Cotton Belt commuter line to join up with DART at the airport station, as well as the talk of TRE commuter rail doing a branch up to the airport. Really good stuff for the busiest airport in Texas!

Dallas DART - 90 miles of rail and connects to airport
Houston METRO - 12.8 miles of rail and does not connect to airport

If you're the only person on the train, it doesn't matter how many places that DART goes, it's not an efficient use of resources. It's called MASS transportation for a reason. If there's no mass there, again, it does not matter if it works for a small minority. That's the DART system in a nutshell.

Houston's system is much further behind but in general it's more useful for the people that use it. And a lot more people use it on a per-mile basis, an advantage that will persist unless Houston begins building "the DART way" and connecting areas only using existing right of ways.

At the end of the day, it's likely that Houston's rail system will eventually consist of the original 5-line plan in the city, and connect to 2-3 commuter routes outside of the city. This is how it should be done. DART is a system that tries to be a catch-all and it's fairly anemic ridership numbers reflect that strategy. Additionally, now that the system is already build out, land uses have to be adapted to the stations. Houston has the opportunity to connect the appropriate land uses correctly, the first time.

I'm not a fan of the stonewalling that's gone on politically with respect to the Houston metro system, but the planned system is superior to DART's current one. The one missing link is IAH and that's actually an easier corridor to deal with than some of the others, so I expect for it to get figured out. It's only a matter of time.

But hey, enjoy your lines on a map! For the record I do think the DFW link will help with ridership, particularly from downtown and the surrounding areas. Time-sensitive travelers will not use it, especially from the northern burbs, but it's a great deal for price-sensitive travelers.

To be fair, Dallas had an 8 year head start.

and pro-rail representatives more than willing to accept funding for new rail projects in their city. Houston has had to battle through representatives like Culberson, Delay, and Lanier, who insisted on voting down projects and turning away funding (some of which Dallas got). if only Houston could of built its heavy rail plan from the early 80s..
