Ok...here is another. Black-eyed peas and home-made ice-cream. That is, in the sense of having to help "prepare" either one.

By the way, this one WILL be "multiple answer"! So let's go...

[O' lord? please help me word this one right...]

I've never heard of "grinding" ice cream. I'm assuming you mean what we called in West TN/MS "churning". Daddy would take over when it would start to freeze up, but I did my share. Today, I "grind" it in Kitchenaid stand mixer with ice cream attachment. And oh yeah--I remember shelling peas til my fingers turned colors & hurt!

We always had an electric ice cream freezer (even my grandparents), so I never had the "honor" of hand-cranking ice cream. I still use my mom's recipe (which has raw eggs) to this day for the rare times I make it.

Never shelled black-eyed peas, and I don't remember ever seeing them growing. I had them only at one great-aunt's house, who used to cook them fresh....good eating! She grew them, and I'm now sorry I didn't go out to the huge garden to see what they looked like as a plant!

I'm not fond of them otherwise.

Good point, hellpaso. LOL Let's just consider "grinding" and "churning" as interchaneable as in the chore!

I remember shelling black eyed peas as a kid. My mom, grandmother and aunt would go to the farmers market and buy 'em then it was us kids job to shell 'em. I personally do not like eat them, but as kids we thought it was fun to shell 'em.

As for "churning" ice cream. Yes, I've done that too. Moms recipe had raw eggs too, and no one ever died from eating it. Moms would mix it, then I would turn the crank until it got too hard, then Dad would take over. I love homemade ice cream, but never make it because my no one in my house can agree on a flavor. I've got an an electric ice cream freezer thing in the attic, I think. I haven't used it in probably 15 years. Got it as a wedding present. I don't remember ever getting rid of it, but we've moved so many times, there's no telling where that thing is.

I will have to admit that Bluebell's Vanilla Bean is awfully close to good home-made ice cream, but not quite as good as my mom's recipe. Other than that, nothing else I've ever had even comes close....not even the specialty ice cream shops!

I think it is the fact that it (my mom's homemade) isn't cooked...all of the igredients are raw, and it's not cooked on the stove to "coat the back of a spoon" as so many are.
