First off this thread is dedicated to Metro Matt because without my back and forth with him, I never would have gotten the idea to truly dive into this topic.

There have been a lot of things said on this forum about where the different metro areas get their transplants. It made me curious and I wanted to get to the bottom of it the best I could. Therefore I spent the better part of this weekend and some free time at work last week getting the answers. As a quick disclaimer, Im going to give myself a 5% margin of error because I had to calculate the data by county and that was a lot of work. That said these numbers are at least going to be correct in scope.

The domestic data is from 2009 and the international from 2011. All links are at the bottom of the thread. The data will be listed by inbound metro area and the data is net change. So the numbers you see take into account new residents from the metro area in question as well as departing residents to that metro area.

Also would be interesting to look at what kind of visa's the immigrants had. Student, work, fiancee visa, etc.

Very interesting stats, thanks for putting the infor together. I love facts and figures.

I believe Chevron recently announced they are moving a number of jobs from SF Bay area to Houston this year. So the figures might show a surge to Houston from that area once this move is completed.

Thanks for the data and informative post about how you did it etc.... great piece of work!

Terrific post. Chock full of useful information. Thanks for all the data. I'd like to see what all those population numbers are now in 2013. I came from Virginia myself.

Could you do a intra Texas migration list? From what I've read, Austin has more people moving to it from within Texas than from outside of it. In other words, people move from other countries/states to Houston/DFW but then the next step is Austin. The numbers would be positive for Austin and negative for DFW, Houston, and San Antonio, in other words those cities lose people to Austin.

That's true. The other major Texas cities have a negative flow to Austin.
