I'm in the process of buying window film to put some tinted windows on my car.
I read the Texas laws for it

TxDPS - VI Window Tint Program

Quote:
Side windows to the right and left of the driver

Sunscreening devices can be applied to the side windows to the right and left of the driver if the following conditions are met.
  1. Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, have a light transmittance value of 25% or more.
  2. Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, have a luminous reflectance value of 25% or less.
Is 25% really the lowest they allow on the side windows in the front?
Does anybody sell 25% window film?
Do people get fines for using 20%? (I see it almost everyday)

I don't know if people get fined but I do know you can't get a Texas safety inspection with tinting darker than what is allowed. I had a GMC Sierra I was tried to bring from New Mexico and the window tint was the first thing they checked with a meter. I would have had to remove tint from above the windshield and on both side windows. I kept the truck registered in NM since I have a home there.

I just bought 20% today and now I gotta take it back.
I'm just hoping I can find 25%, I want all the windows to be the same.

Most tint places will only put 32% on the front drivers and passenger windows due to the law. I put 32% on all four windows and 18% on the back window of my TL. It's plenty dark......

Honestly, places will tint your windows darker than 32% but they won't stamp the approval on it indicating its legal.

I had a 20% I tinted back in 2009 and have never had a problem- even at inspections and also when I lived in California (which are prob strictest in the country). I did 20 I think it's looks pretty nice and doesn't look so dark that it becomes suspicious.

Anywho, unless you're getting 5 or 0 which is definitely noticeable, you probably won't have issues come up unless you get stopped plenty and they tell you something. You're right, many cars out there have less than 32 and certain inspection places won't think twice what tint you have. Good luck!
