A business that deals in hazardous materials opens up in an area that is distanced from the main population. The population grows around it and then when something happens people get mad and point fingers at the business and government. Last I looked no one forced people to buy or live next to a plant of any kind.

Hoping the bad weather that was reported to come thru Texas tonight does not hit West and these people can deal with this tragedy without any other obstructions blocking their healing and cleanup of the area. I'm getting nervous with all of the helicopters at the scene going in and out with this high wind in the area. It is ripping at our house in Dallas and just looking at the flags in the background of the news reports. Prayers that they can safely evacuate all of the injured out safely to be treated. Did hear that they are reporting 150+ survivors from the nursing home. Praises for that good news.
It just doesn't make much sense to build a nursing home, school, and apartment building so close to a fertilizer plant.

Live Updates: West Texas Fertilizer Plant

West plant still smoldering, DPS trooper says damage 'just like Iraq'

Latest reports indicate more than 200 injured, 40 critically, unknown deaths, five-block area of the town decimated including 50 homes, apartment building(s), nursing home, etc.

Our hearts, prayers and condolences go out to all affected by this devastating event in this small town of West.

And, kudos to the first responders and all others that have travelled to the area to assist in the rescue efforts still going on this a.m.

Also see the West, TX Emergency Resources contact list for donation sites and places to stay for those displaced.

Blessings to all... such a sad day in Texas!

also one other thing there is one report quoting the front desk clerk at the Best Western stating that water got on ammonium nitrate and it exploded......that would be 100% erroneous since the reaction between water and ammonium nitrate is ENDOTHERMIC in other words it ABSORBS heat from what is around it it does not react and create heat

the cold packs that you buy for camping or for sports injuries are ammonium nitrate and water and when you break the water pouch and it reacts with the ammonium nitrate it creates COLD it DOES NOT EXPLODE.....that is what happens when you get your news reports and your poor chemistry lessons from the front desk clerk of the Best Western

"Six firefighters, two paramedics and a police officer are confirmed dead and seven nursing home residents were missing after the blast according to West EMS Director Dr. George Smith, who said earlier Wednesday night as many as 60 or 70 people may have died in the blast."

"By 3:30 a.m. ET, hospitals near the blast site reported treating 179 people, with 10 more being triaged. At least 24 patients at the hospitals were in critical condition and 38 in serious condition."

Very sad day for Texas.

I love this post. The news media are full of news-readers who don't really know a dam thing about anything, especially chemical manufacturing/storage/distribution, but that doesn't stop them from reporting gossip and misinformation non-stop.

Man, this is horrific. Not the news I wanted to wake up to. It looks like just an awful tragedy and not any sort of deliberate act.

Thinking about the town of West and their neighbors this morning.
