We'll be taking a trip through your fine state mid-july, and I'm wanting to do a little more exploring and get off I-10 a little. Any particularly good drives (I'm sure there's all kinds of sweet backroads, but we do need them to be moving in a fairly westerly direction) or places to eat? I've had the best mexican food of my life from a little roadside taco stand outside of SA.

I'm mainly looking for things west of I-35, East Texas is beautiful but not a whole lot different than my home.

Take a look at the Texas Travel Guide. If it exists, the Travel Guide has been there. It's divided into sections of the state. If you're traveling on I-10 west of I-35, then check the sections labeled 'Hill Country', and 'Big Bend Country'.

You can even download a PDF (about 175 megs) and/or send off for your own glossy hard copy. Yes, they'll mail out of state.

Good luck, travel safe

Lost Maples state park is a treat and can be found heading west, its south if I10, near Leaky Tx. Also interesting are much further south of I10 down toward Big Bend and Fort Davis. El Paso area is neat to see as well.

The rest stop right across the river in East Texas is a nice location.

I heard there was an awesome restraunt in Fort Stockton but I don't remember the name.

Balmorhea State Park — Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

Plan your Mid West Texas stop at Balmorhea. You may want reservations now.

You can cut north and go through New Bruansfells eat at then Grist Mill up in Gruene then take the back road to Fredricksburg. Unless you want to make it into San Antonio.
