Try an ice cold Bombshell Blonde. It's the perfect Texas beer for a hot Texas day.

I do think that the American craft brewery scene, in an attempt to distance themselves from the macrobrews who do the watery lager beers, have missed the mark a bit. Sometimes people want complex and exciting flavors, and sometimes they just want cool refreshment. Ales aren't really good for that. Or they aren't as good as a simple lager can be. I think theres a good market for more breezy lagers, especially in southern states where it's hell on earth for a few months out of the year.

SteelBubble's suggestion of Bombshell Blonde is a good one. Lighty, not heavy on flavor, locally made, and still refreshing.

Most mainstream beers (like Bud and Miller) use rice and/or corn in addition to malted barley. Why? Because it ferments (to create alcohol) but adds almost no taste.

I'll shut up now.
We consider ourselves beer snobs too, and drink many of the ones you listed

Blue laws are a funny thing in Texas. Having lived in Bell county for a number of years, they had a really odd set of laws pertaining to alcohol. I am sure much of the reason was due, at least in part, on the more rural setting of the county. You could buy beer and wine in grocery stores, but not on Sunday. You could only buy "hard liquor" in the small town of Morgan's Point Resort, or on post at Fort Hood. You could purchase cocktails at local restaurants and bars, but you had to be a member of a private club. To get around this, local merchants used the free Unicard system. If you didn't have one, you could apply for it on the spot, and it was free. Just a card you filled out and kept it in your wallet. There was an article in the Temple Daily Telegram a few years ago about the upcoming retirement of the one person on the county payroll charged with enforcing this very confusing system of rules and regulation. She said something along the lines of "it would take almost two years for me to teach a replacement all the intricacies of these rules." Bottom line, instead of a prolonged hand over, Bell county went wet. All the abandoned Blockbuster video stores became liquor stores. Of course, there was much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth at the outset from concerned citizens that were just convinced this would be downfall of life as they knew it. Drunk mobs in the streets, suburban housewives flashing school buses, looting, arson, dogs and cats living together....but it was pretty much a non-issue.
