We have a possible transfer to Irving in our future.
Clueless about Texas - we have lived in Florida,Georgia and currently in Tennseese.
Where should we be looking for housing??? Kids are in college, we enjoy a lot of outdoor activities and would need to keep housing under 300K.
Any help and direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Irving is one of the original inner-ring suburbs of Dallas that exploded in growth in the 1960's and 1970's when white flight hit Dallas in a big way. Back then, North Irving (the areas north of Highway 183 aka Airport Freeway) was the nicest part of town. University Hills and the adjoining neighborhoods around MacArthur High School (the very first Las Colinas neighborhoods) were the best parts. Many of the neighborhoods are still nice but the school situation has worsened as the city has aged. All the kids grew up and moved away, leaving their aging parents living in the nice homes while many of the less expensive homes have turned to rentals. The demographics have changed now and Irving isn't as desirable as it once was. The best areas have moved farther north beyond Highway 114 so, if you're thinking of living in Irving, that's where you want to stay. Personally, I'd choose someplace nice in Fort Worth but your commute to Irving would be horrendous - I understand Airport Freeway eastbound is a parking lot in the mornings. They're supposed to rebuild Airport Freeway sometime in the not-too-far-distant future as it goes through Irving and it will be a MESS. What about living in Dallas and commuting west to Irving? You'd be going against the traffic and you'd have many nice areas to choose from, especially since schools aren't an issue.

Hi
Thanks for the info. Since we have NO clue any direction is truly appreciated. You answered my question about the commute from Ft. Worth into Irving. My husbands "potential" job would be in Irving and he would like to keep the commute to approximately 30 minutes. Does this open up other areas that you are familiar with??
I will also ck Dallas - any recommendations? From other sites, it appears the property taxes are quite "healthy" in Texas - is this why the housing is extremely affordable?
Thanks for your help,

Check out the mid-cities (Hurst, Euless, Bedford). We live in Hurst and it's a 20 minute drive to Irving in rush hour traffic. The property taxes are higher than many states, but Texas has no state income tax so it pretty much evens out. If you want more details about my area send me a PM. Good luck to you.
