I am planning to move this summer out of my current city for various reasons. I had narrowed my search down to Chicago and SF but many posters have recommended going to Texas.

I am a single mother with a 5-yr old daughter. I currently live in Fresno, CA and work in an admin job (although my BA is in global econ). I initially thought Chicago because COL is cheaper than SF and I get all the big city amenities, especially great public transportation. However, most of my friends are in the SF bay area. The con is that it's so expensive that posters are recommending to look into Texas.

I would look into the large cities of Texas but I've never been there, know no one there, and I would really appreciate some insight, advice, opinions of Texas.

How does it compare to Fresno if anyone has been to both (especially in terms of culture, lifestyle, etc.)?
Is there good enough public transportation to ditch my car?

Public transportation? Not much.

Not able to make a comparison for you but I would only advise that if you do not WANT to move to Texas then you should seriously consider the alternatives. There is not much quite so sad as a transplant to Texas seeking a wonderful life, only to discover he/she has landed in the pits of hell. Both in a social sense as well as weather wise.

Willsson, thanks for the advice. I guess I never considered Texas and learned about it enough to make me decide whether or not I'd like it or not. It was the same with Chicago. Never thought of it until someone suggested it.

Weaterntraveler, I might check out some books from the library tomorrow

Heat and Humidity.

You may get hot in Fresno, but you all are not Humid. You all cool down in the evening. here in Texas...the heat is on now and will last till October.

We are in the mid 90s but are lows are only in the low 70's and sticky humid.

Chimuelojones, thanks for letting me know it's humid. I don't mind the heat too much, even if it doesn't cool down. I actually hate it when it's cold enough in the morning to wear a jacket but get hot afternoon to the extent of wanting to be naked, lol

The climate varies through the state. East Texas will be humid, but it dries out as you go west. El Paso is arid.

Both quite significantly better than Fresno, IMO.
