Ooops! I should have googled Odessa first to refresh my memory...lol. However, it's interesting to note that Ukraine was part of the U.S.S.R. until it became independent again in 1991.

Waco is named after the Huaco Indians that lived in the area. Occassionally you'll see some things (streets, businesses, etc.) in the Heart of Texas area that have Huaco in the name.

Levelland
Liberty Hill
Lampasas
Ballinger

A silly sounding name: Itasca (the initial vowel is long, as in the pronoun I, for the uninitiated)

A cute name: Justin

A stupid name, considering its location: Eden

A dumb-sounding name when you think about it: Post

A mispronounced name: San Angelo (though that would be true of Los Angeles, as well)

A name that probably accounts for why the city itself is the object of so much gratuitous derision: Waco

A name that should NEVER be shortened to only the first of its two Latin words: Corpus Christi (my birthplace)

An easily misspelled name: Rhome

Another mispronounced name: Amarillo

It was part of Russia until Kruschev transferred the Crimea - in which Odessa is situated - from the Russian Federated Soviet Socialist Republic to the Ukranian Soviet Socialist Republic as a gesture in observance of the millenium of the Ukranian nation (it may have been an even larger anniversary, I can't recall and don't feel like looking it up just now). Of course, no doubt the tsarist Russian Empire had previously snatched the Crimea from Ukraine, before itself swallowing up all but the western Ukraine, which had been part of Poland -- the USSR finished the latter job at the end of WWII.

The g should be something close to the aspirated Spanish j -- our h sound; same for Los Angeles.

That's interesting doctorjef! I studied the history of that region of the world at one time, but that was many years ago and I've forgotten a lot of it...lol.

Good. I see others are listing towns as well as cities so I will too. Offhand, these came to mind, I'm sure I'll think of more later.

Like:

Bandera
Sequin
Eagle Pass
Lampasas

Like for being quirky:

Valentine
Cool

Dislike:

Cleburne (never thought about it before, but since we now have so many Yankees around here and they pronounce it as Cle-BORN and it just seems to keep going bong, bong, bong after they say it, I have come to despise that name).
