I could not find a thread relating to "Cities with the best and worst names" on Texas threads so I will start one for the Texas. There was a thread similar to this but it was not in Texas.

This is a pure subjective thread. This is nothing to brag or beat other cities down. It's for the fun.

Texas cities only!

My five best cities' names:

San Antonio, sounds very cool to say it.
Sinton, sounds legit.
Atascocita, I have a hard time prouncing it but it sounds unique.
Waco, sounds cool.
New Braunsfel, sounds unique.

My five worst cities' names:

Anything with "ville"
Any cities with names that matches with major cities or countries in the world (London, Paris, China)
Odessa, it sounds stupid.
Graham, sounds boring.
Lubbock, I don't know why.

Fingernails on the chalk board.

It's New Braunfels.

Correct it & I'll delete this.

Coolest

Gun Barrel City - Because it sounds so stereotypical Texan

Grand Prairie - Shortened to GP by the younger locals

Longview - Named for its hilly terrain & woodsy setting

Tyler - After President John Tyler

Austin - After Stephen F. Austin

Houston - Named after General Sam Houston who gave Texas is independence from Mexico

Sugar Land - Home of Imperial Cane Sugar

The Woodlands - Self explanitory

Kingwood - Self explanitory

Baytown - City by the bay

League City - Reminds me of the movie 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

Galveston - Named after Spanish explorer Galvez

Corpus Christi - The Body of Christ

San Antonio - St. Anthony

El Paso - Any Spanish name automatically sounds cool

Dumbest

Dallas - Sounds like the name of a cheap street hooker or red lipstick wearing waitress with heavy Southern accent at a diner.

Waco - Yes, they are Wacko there

Midland - Lets be more original here

Nacogdoches - Yes, I realize its an Indian tribe.

Kilgore - I wouldn't miss him

As great as Texas is, I've always thought we had some of the most dull and unimaginative city names. Half of them are just average people names or sound like tract home subdivisions: Houston, Austin, Tyler, Longview, Lubbock, Amarillo, Plano, Humble, The Woodlands, Katy, Kyle, Bryan, McAllen, etc. <---Hate those

Names I like:
Nacogdoches
Beaumont
Atascocita
Palestine
Corpus Christi
Dallas
Galveston
League City
Kingwood
Sugar Land
La Porte
Buda
Pflugerville
Kirby
New Boston
Round Rock
Sweetwater
Cleburne
DeSoto
Gladewater
Carthage
Uncertain

My Best Cities' Names:

Sugar Land--it just sounds unique and cool to me
Grand Prairie--very descriptive of the area it's in
Galveston--I just like the way it sounds
Amarillo-it sounds like it's in Texas
Waco--it really sounds like it's in Texas...lol
San Antonio-I just like the way it sounds
Corpus Christi-another unique and cool name

My Worst Cities' Names:

Paris--same name of a city in France!...lol.
Odessa--same name of a city in Russia!...lol.
Plano--it sounds plain...lol
Lubbock--love it there but it just sounds weird...lol
Lufkin--never been there but it sounds weird too
Pflugerville--sounds the weirdest of all...lol
Beaumont-it sounds more like a city that would be in Louisiana.

Uh, well, it practically is. The French origins of the name gives a nod to the Cajun culture found in the area. I'm not sure how anyone could dislike it.

Ah. Another reason for me to hate it...the name, that is. I have no problem with the actual place.
