Hi everyone, your favorite schizophrenic Yankee back with another thread topic for ya'll to mull over. So as the regulars around here probably know, but which I am bound to repeat Im looking to move from New York somewhere in Texas. Currently I have my eye on College Station/Bryan but Im also giving Texarkana a look over too. Basically my question is this: can a person, unmarried, no kids live on minimum wage in the state? And when I say live Im talking basic necessities, food/rent/utilities/gas/(car) insurance? And yes, Im willing to work more than one job if need be, Im just wondering if it can be done at all (even with more than one job, if you can get that.)

You can live anywhere in the state if basics are all you seek.

Why are you so fixated on minimum wage? Most Texans aren't working for minimum wage, even in entry level jobs. Do you have absolutely zero skills and zero work history?

Im sure you could live in any state on minimum wage technically, but would it be enjoyable? I highly doubt it.

I'm with Kathryn.

Why are you aiming so low? Even if you're in college with minmum experience, you can find some entry level jobs that pay a little more than minimum wage. Even if you have a criminal background, there are programs through DARS that might be able to set you up on something a little better.

But you could probably live in some states better than others. Main thing to remember though is that most people making minimum wage are young people just starting out in life. Or those who made life choices that kept them there.

In the majority of cases, those making a minimum wage today -- with some foresight, thrifty habits, and simple desire to succeed a bit, will enter the middle/upper-classes in 20 years or so. And that account for most of the same.

The problem with minimum wage is it doesn't allow for things such as your car needs a new starter, battery, or new tires. These things may seem trivial to the average person but their a catastrophic event waitig to happen to anyone living on minimum wage. A person living on minimum wage lives pay check to pay check and can't afford to miss a day because of a flat tire or simply being sick. Frankly, I'm amazed anyone would consider such a cross country move based on a minimum wage salary. If you must move, why settle for San Marcus when Midland/Odessa Texas is rated number one for jobs according to Forbes Magazine? I've seen high school drop outs making $12/hr @50-70 /wk. Sure housing sucks, but I you can afford to move to San Marcus, you can afford a small pop up camper an RV rent.

Yes, but you will have NO life because you're going to be working 24/7.

Aim higher than minimum wage. I was making more in high school than the current minimum wage.

Seek out warehouse or telemarketing jobs. Those should at least get you 10 or more an hour.

The last time I made minimum wage was in high school when I worked at the mall.

Service industry jobs pay a lot more than minimum wage, especially if you are waiting tables or bar tending. Any job that is even slightly skilled, such as fast food, will pay more than minimum wage.

In my opinion the best job a poor person can get is working in a restaurant
in many restaurants you get to eat for free and that will save you a lot of money
add to the tie it will save you from cooking and going shopping for food.

When I was in college I was completely broke and worked in a fast food restaurant where we could eat for free
I don't even want to know how much money I saved by eating there, but I bet it was a s.... lot of money.
