When I hear young people around Delaware say "y'all", it sounds entirely unaffected, though isn't coupled with any strong Southern accent. It doesn't overtly come across as being "hip". The natives here have a very neutral (to my ears) sort of accent and you can readily hear intruders from North Jersey, Long Island, or the more ethnic/working class-influenced varieties of NYC or Eastern Pennsylvania speech. The young guy whom I cited in the earlier post looked to be about 20-22. I've also heard older and definitely not cool adults use "y'all" in Delaware, especially Lower Delaware (the more rural and agricultural southern 2/3's of the state). This could either be due to dialect spread or to DE's position as a border state.
well docJ and TexasReb and cathy, i pronounce "oil' like "loyal" with out the "L" so "oyal".everyone i know says it like that.

STANDING OVATION and rep point plus one for this one! This pretty much described it perfectly, Westerntraveler. I am just irritated I didn't think of it myself! LOL Great job!

*after thought* Of course, I suppose it also depends on how one pronounces "Loyal"...in "Texas tawk"! As it is, mine sounds like "laww'y'ull"

On a related tangent, the link earlier appears to be broken (the one concerning the use of "y'all and "you all"). Here is one that should work:

In fact, this map (the red and green colored states) pretty much matches how I would define "the South."

I agree that oy-al is the most frequent edumacated Texas pronunciation but it does add a syllable that isn't indicated by the spelling -- which in a way is the whole point of this tangent.

Argh! City-Data ate 'alf me post! TexasReb, that map is wrong. It has the Eastern Shore of VA outside the y'all region. The bit of VA on the Delmarva penninsula is very Southern. Chincoteague, VA is the only place I've ever seen a chicken Caesar salad served with fried chicken tenders in it and a waitress struggling mightily to articulate "Pi-nee-oh Gri-jee-ohhh". Besides all those Stars and Bars that crop up in the lower rural Delmarva.
