In May, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 41 states and the District
of Columbia, decreased in 5 states, and was unchanged in 4 states. The
largest over-the-month increases in employment occurred in Texas (+43,600),
California (+28,300), New York (+21,000), and Florida and Virginia
(+20,300 each). Delaware recorded the largest over-the-month percentage
increase in employment (+0.9 percent), followed by Maine and Rhode Island
(+0.7 percent each) and Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia,
and Wyoming (+0.6 percent each).

The state unemployment (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Unemployment - broken link) rate remained at 8.3 percent, unchanged from April and well below the national average of 9.7 percent in May. Employers in nine of 11 job categories expanded payrolls, with employment increasing by 10,200 jobs in the professional and business services category and by 9,600 in leisure and hospitality.
Manufacturing employers expanded payrolls by 7,000 jobs. The mining and logging category, which includes oil and gas drilling, grew by 6,500. Construction added 2,000.
The only categories showing employment losses were information, down 2,900, and government, down 1,100.
