You have to get off I-10 but it is worth the 15 min drive--LULING CITY MARKET--accept no substitutes (and there is one just in the next block)
the real Luling City Market is one of the top 5 recommended by Texas Monthly's research and it is awesome--brisquet is some of the best, but their pork link sausage--packed in natural casing--is just out of this world good...
they sell sides like pinto beans and potato salad but the meat comes by the slice and on brown butcher paper still---just the best...
read what Google has to say about it

Wait, west Texas? Where? cause none of these places are in West Texas...
I know though that Rudy's is growing and spreading- There's one in El Paso now! and that place just started as this little "shack" in Leon Springs (NW San Antonio). (It's not really a shack but it's kindof "decorated" as one. anyway back on subject, Rudy's is GREAT and I would recomend eating there if you ever get the chance)

I second that. It's another great stop.

It's conveniently off the side of I-10 for an easy stop next to a gas station or whatever else you may need.
Hey, I've been there too, a few years ago on a road trip from CA to TX. One of my "road rules" is to avoid fast food chain places, and instead look for a local owned eating place that's named after the owner. Cooper's had this going for it: clean, quick service, excellent food and reasonable prices. Friendly people there too.

Rudy's started in San Antonio and is starting to spread out all over Texas. Interesting fact is that next door to the original Rudy's in San Antonio was the first Macaroni Grill which has franchised all over the country

There is one in Junction, Texas (headed toward West Texas from San Antonio). I don't remember the name but the sign said "Nobody beats our meat!". It made me laugh. It was great food though.
