I like that Esperson building. In my opinion this building is one of the best in Houston and Texas. Would I be allowed to go up there in the open area or is it blocked off?

Who's buried on top of the Esperson Building?

I've always heard a rumor that someone is buried on top of the Niels Esperson Building downtown, so the building owners don't have to pay taxes because the building is legally a cemetery. Is that true?
This reminds Ask Houstonist of the old joke about who's buried in Grant's Tomb. The answer, of course, is nobody — people are entombed in Grant's Tomb, not buried. It's sort of the same thing with the Niels Esperson Building: Nobody is buried there, and no one's entombed there, either.

It's a great story, but it's not true. In fact, the Espersons — both Niels and Mellie — are buried at Forest Park Lawndale cemetery. So what's on top of the Niels Esperson Building? Not much. In the building's early years, the "temple" was an observation deck, but it's now closed. There also used to be a set of chimes dedicated to Niels's memory, but they have been replaced with an electronic recording (which is what you hear marking the quarter hours when you're in the northwestern part of downtown). There is a plaque on the former observation level that talks about how the chimes are a memorial to Niels — that, along with the idea that the whole building was built in his memory (a concept that was well-publicized when the building was new), is probably what gave rise to the rumor that Niels himself was atop the building.
