I apologize if this thread theme has been posted before, but I confess I just learned about it recently. That is, the passing of James Street, the quarterback of the University of Texas Longhorns football team, who lead the 'Horns to a National Championship in 1969, and never lost a game during the entire time he was a starter.

Some of y'all might remember the legendary "Big Shootout" game against Arkansas that year -- Texas ranked No. 1 and Arkansas No. 2, and Texas managed to win it in the last several minutes (15-14), with Street being the one who scored -- or was responsible for scoring -- on all the plays that made the Texas victory possible (being behind 14-0 going in to the 4th quarter).

He was a champ all the way!

For those interested, here are a couple of links. The first being to his "obituary", and the other some clips from the game itself highlighting his amazing performance:

He was too slow, too small.....all he did was win. If there was ever a player that fit the "it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog" expression it was Street. Thanks for starting this thread Reb (& for posting that video). Cr*p, I forgot just how incredible that 40 yard scrambling touchdown was.

RIP James Street. There are a handful of immortal Longhorns that people will talk about a hundred years from now.....you're one of them.

You said it perfectly, Hound!

And just thinking, too...on that same team there was little Freddy Steinmark who died of bone cancer, and played in that same game and proved the same you say about Street, as to the size of the fight in the dog.

I hope they are having a good time Up There right now, greeting and sitting down to Remember When...!

The recent Alabama / Auburn game finish reminded me of the UT win. Best 2 endngs in football. (Rose Bowl finish by Vince Young was close)

I had known about his death. RIP

I remember the 1969 UT vs Ark. shootout game. I was sacking groceries at a small family owned grocery store. The owners were big Texas fans and had the game on. Also a local HS star was in the game (Cotton Speyer).

Got to meet Randy Peschel (he caught the big 4th down pass from Street) at back to school night about 25 years ago - his daughter was in my social studies class.

Street's sudden death was certainly a shocker.

BobTex - I remember well when Cotton Speyer made his own game winning catch against UCLA a couple years later.

Was shocked at his death when I heard about it. Every time I did see him, he always seemed very youthful.

& the diving 4th down catch (by Speyer) on the Notre Dame 3 yard line....late in the 4th quarter with the game & the National Championship on the line. (& if Street doesn't lay it low & way out, the ND DB easily knocks it away & the Irish win the game & the National Championship).

Crazy good stuff. I love "players" who make "plays". (it ain't about how much they bench press or what their 40 is). Same era (a few years later).....Montana was a third round pick. Hilarious.

Street (& speyer & peschel) was a player & a gamer.
