Thinking of retiring from up north. Have visited Texas and love it!
Would appreciate opinions on the towns of Kerrville and New Braunfels,
regarding:
scenery
weather
amenities
local attitudes

Thanks!

Ive been to both places...I think both are nice.I would prolly pick New Braunfels personally myself due to my fellow Germans, San Antone/Austin and closer to lakes.....However If I was picking a place to retire it would be Kerrville mainly because of 35 in New Braunfels.

Kerrville feels a lot more Central Texas Hill Country IMO. It's scenic in a rugged way. It feels slightly isolated. New Braunfels would be preferable if you want readier access to San Antonio and Austin, but the down side of that is that the burbs of Ssn Antonio keep spreading north along I35, swallowing up what used to be small, stand-alone towns. NB is now almost a part of greater SA.

We have lived between New Braunfels and San Marcos since 1990 and my family has owned a home on the river in Gruene since 1973. I have watched NB morph from a family friendly town to a tourist town, and all that entails. Drunks on the river who have little respect for the town and river outfitters that have driven out anyone who disagrees with allowing tourists to trash the town. Finally, the can ban has driven most of the drunks out during the summer and NB is slowly going back to being family friendly and devoid of 500,000+ pounds of cans in the Comal river in a 3 month period. I love the ambiance of NB and hope it continues to go back to what it once was.
That being said, I love the Kerrville area and if we had a choice between NB and Kerville to retire, it would be Kerville. Gorgeous area with easy access to the Frio and Guadalupe rivers.

Kerrville is definitely a retirement community, and offers a lot of services for older people. My parents love it there. They go into San Antonio sometimes! but Kerrville has everything they need. It is less of a tourist town that new Braunfels.

Not really all that relevant if one is living there full time, but one visiter attraction in Kerrville that I really enjoy is the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. Wonderful collection in a nice building. I haven't been to Kerrville in many years (it was a nice, easy overnight getaway when we lived in Austin), but they had a couple of quite nice, rather Western-themed hotels that were affiliated with major brands. I think it's a good thing that Kerrville is a bit out of the way and less readily accessible to tourists, compared to NB. Even if NB is being cleaned up, it still has that big water park, is just off I35 with all the outlet malls, and is being constantly travelled by both in- and out-of-state visiters.

I know many people who I worked with in Texas over the years who chose Kerrville when it came time to retire. I don't know a single person who chose New Braunfels. Canyon Lake area also seems to be a popular area and would be a good compromise between Kerrville and NB. I have friends who live in Canyon Lake and own a business in NB - which caters to the tourist trade there.

Between the two you mentioned, I'd pick Kerrville for retirement.

I think Kerrville is a little cooler than San Antone but I don't know how that would compare with New Braunfels.I never notice a difference when im in the area. They are both Hill Country but I think the hill country from Ozona to San Antone looks a little different to me.
