Fatality Facts

Texas is at 13.0 deaths per 100,000 persons or 1.43 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.

Utah which doesn't have any significant mass transit system is at 7.6 deaths/100,000 people or 0.83 deaths/100 million miles traveled.

Utah doesn't have a significant mass transit system?

They just finished building 70 miles of rail in 7 years.. That's almost the entire length of DARTs light rail (the biggest LRT system in the country).. Which took over two decades to build (still quite fast and impressive, especially compared to Houston's measly 12 miles over the last decade). And I'm not sure how much of that is including the 175 miles of ROW they acquired from UP in 2002. If it's just the 90 of so miles shown in the map along i15 then when built the full length, Utah will probably have a more extensive mass transit (Rail wise) system than Texas.. We need to step it up...

I live in the Petroplex and I am 2.5 times more likely to get killed on the road than elsewhere in Texas.

Texas also has more than 8x the population of Utah and its roads are more crowded. Texas also has multiple large cities as Utah only has one. You can't compare Texas traffic stats with Utah's stats. Texas would need to be compared with California, New York, or Florida.

Aww - don't spoil their fun. People spend hours going to through all types of 'statistics' just to cherry pick something to show that Texas is the "worst" at something or the other.

It's a pretty harmless hobby and really amusing.

Texas: 13.0
Florida: 12.5
California: 7.5
New York: 6.0

I'd bet that New York is so much lower due to the huge percentage of its population that lives in NYC/Long Island. Lots of those folks take mass transit everywhere they go and don't even own a car.

And California? Probably just smarter people on average than the idiots who drive here.

More of the CA drivers don't have insurance and just pretend it didn't happen, so no report for the statistics .
