do those states have any recent history for treating blacks like we're still in the tail end of the 19th century?

Oregon, for example

CORVALLIS, Ore., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Oregon State University is taking steps to address racism on campus, including a noose left at a Halloween party and racist content in the school newspaper.
There are fewer than 300 black students among the student body of 27,000 at the Corvallis campus. Two of them -- Shannon Warren and Roshawn Davis -- joined other black students in a protest after the campus paper published a photograph of a student in blackface as part of a story on a fan "blackout" at a football game, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Sunday.
White students involved in the incident -- and in the hanging of a noose at a Halloween party -- said they hadn't meant to offend anyone, the Oregonian said.
Warren and Davis said they are accustomed to being the only black students in a classroom. Warren grew up in Alaska and Davis attended high school in Portland.
However, Warren said when she arrived at OSU "somebody told me … 'I thought you were going to be like (the black TV character) Moesha.'"
In an effort to address the problem, the university staged a mock trial with students arguing conflicting sides of the issue.
During last weekend's protest, a passerby yelled, "Go racism" and pumped his fist, the campus paper reported.
Being from OR, I'd say if you're black but "act white", you're fine, with a few rare exceptions. If you're black and "act black", don't expect too much.

I feel an impending racism warning coming from the admins. Please note that I'm just making observations here.

I don't think it's weird at all. Vidor was in the news a lot for intimidating any black person in town into moving out, and we wanted to see if what was reported in the media was true. And yes, seeing a black person probably would have made us feel more comfortable; my college roommate and I both come from very diverse cities and it's weird being around nothing but white people.

Quality restaurants in Vidor? LOL!

We went to those places because it was late at night and they were the only establishments still open at that hour. I do believe I stated this already.

Some people seem to think, without visiting or even researching, that the USA that is not the South is some kind of loving utopia, when the truth is the South has likely made the most advancement in this area over the past 50 years.

* Person A feels uncomfortable in places that aren't 100% homogenous.

* Person B feels uncomfortable in places that aren't diverse enough according to their own standard of social engineering.

I honestly don't see much difference between Person A and Person B.

So, you felt a quick survey of public places late at night would confirm the media reports? To me, that's even weirder than feeling uncomfortable if there's not the 'right mix' of people in a place. If you really want to get rid of racism, you probably need to quit focusing on people's race...

I think you're pretty judgemental, and it seems to me that you are deliberately misinterpreting everything I'm saying in order to paint me as a racist. You're picking a fight, and I'm not going to play this game.

Do you consider my comments picking a fight because I disagreed with you or because I said you were weird? (Keeping in mind you called me judgmental...)

OK then... if it's so terrible in this 95% white town, try moving to one that is 95% minority. Should be heaven for you. Enjoy!
