Unemployment rates

Texas’ unemployment rate fell for the fifth straight month to 6 percent from 6.1 percent in November. Last month’s rate was well below the national unemployment rate of 6.7 percent for December.

The Dallas area’s unemployment rate fell to 5.4 percent in December from 5.9 percent a year earlier. The Fort Worth area’s rate declined to 5.3 percent from 5.7 percent in December 2012.
Texas added 17,600 jobs in December and 252,400 jobs in all of 2013 (Updated at 2:30 p.m. with interactive graphics) | Dallas Morning News

That's a meaningless statistic. That's like saying Honolulu has the best unemployment rate in Hawaii. Duh, it's the only city

Hey guys, I heard Houston ranked best unemployment rate in the Houston Metro Area!!

Apparently that's not what the Texas Workforce Commission thinks as they are the ones who prepare and publish these employment related stats seperatly for both FTW & Dallas, while only for Houston when it comes to employment/unemployment stats for southeastern Texas. Clearly they think that the North Texas economy is anchored by 2 large, significant, but different municipal-employment centers.

Really, does the Texas Workforce Commission include Beaumont and Port Arthur in with the Houston employment stats?

The TWC prepares and publishes seperate stats for FtWorth, Dallas, & Houston because they are major Texas cities/metro areas, but Beaumont and Port Arthur are not. So I'm not sure if I follow your question ?

Actually the interactive map that accompanies the article you posted to support your claim answers my question. The TWC monitors 18 distinct job markets in the state, not just "major" metropolitan areas.

If you are posting about the number of jobs created then you are of course correct, although as winko posted, your claim that DFW are #1 and #2 in "north" Texas seems too obvious to mention. But congratulations all the same to DFW..

Correction: FtW is #1 & Dallas is #2 in DFW, the point being that DFW/North Texas is the only metro area in all of Texas with 2 large, distinctive, and seperate cities. By comparison there's only one large anchor city in Houston metro, and Austin metro and SA metro. Guess DFW is just lucky, 'cause it has two (2).

Or maybe that means that "North" Texans are just eccentric and cannot decide on where their center is, or should be.

It's not The Highlander, there can be more than one.
