My husband and I are looking into purchasing a starter home in Abilene, but we are still overseas. I've done so much research on the preferable zip codes and low-crime areas. However, our budget won't allow us to buy in Wylie or any of the other good neighborhoods. We're looking into a property close to the intersection of 1st and Mockingbird. May anyone be able to tell me if the railroad is pretty loud in that area?

Thanks so much in advance!

I'll sometimes eat at restaurants along N & S 1st. I definitely notice the train rumble by, but it's never been bothersome to me (granted, eating a meal is different than trying to sleep. Are you or your husband light sleepers?)

I noticed that you mention the intersection of 1st and Mockingbird. In that immediate area, it generally seems that crime is lower west of Mockingbird and north of the tracks. Of course, this is just my perception and could vary from neighborhood to neighborhood.
