Oh my...

My best advice is to use Google Street View to take a quick peak at various areas around each city. In ambiance, there is NO comparison, in my view. Dry, windy, flat and dusty Lubbock can't compare to wet, temperate, hilly and green San Antonio.

You might enjoy reading the lyrics and listening to Mac Davis sing his "signature" tune:

Happiness is Lubbock, Texas in my rear view mirror

Be sure and read or listen to the end of the song.

What areas of SA are better for living?

Advice would have to take into consideration access to your daily job site.

I lived in Olmos Park when I lived there. Very convenient to all of downtown as well as other areas east of IH-10. It's an old neighborhood of valued upscale homes with good local shopping for daily needs. It is an incorporated town within shouting distance of downtown San Antonio, with its own town government and police dept. Not sure how easy it would be to find rentals, and the better-kept homes will be pricey. Also one of the lowest crime rates of SA neighborhoods.

The Northwest side is the best in my opinion.

Unless you really prefer older homes the north side is a good option. The Medical Center is off I-10 not far from Loop 1604. The Stone Oak medical area is at Hwy 281/Loop 1604 and the medical area springing up on the far NW side is around 151 just inside Loop 1604. These areas are all northside and mostly near 1604 if you want to see the areas on a map. Most of the northside is relatively safe. I live north central because overall I feel safest on this side of town, although since we have kids our deciding factor was schools.

Amarillo compares favorably if you're comparing it to Lubbock! But it has long been noted for having the most severe weather in Texas, especially in winter. For example, at this very moment, 7:45am on Feb. 26, it is 16F in Amarillo. High today is forecast to be 46F - tomorrow it's forecast to be 72F!

At the same time, San Antonio is enjoying light rain and it's 45F, forecast for Thursday is in the low 80s.

I once again suggest you use Google Satellite View to get a rough feel for just how dry it is there. Then zoom in on various areas of town and use Street View to check out specific features.

Not sure why the Texas forum has a separate Lubbock section and no Amarillo section. There are older threads that can be found using the "search" function that address living conditions in Amarillo.

Amarillo is very comparable to Lubbock. It's a bit smaller- over 40k fewer people. And it has fewer entertainment opportunities and amenities than Lubbock affords due to the universities in Lubbock. And it does get a bit colder. Lots of nice folks there though.
