I'm needing confirmation that a lawyer is NOT required in the state of Texas for an uncontested adoption? I know many people recommend it, but is it required and how hard is it to do it yourself if you know all the steps? I would like to hear feedback from people who actually have experience with adopting a grandchild (or other family member) without a lawyer involved. Again this is in Texas if that makes a difference. Also, the mother lives with us (for now) and agrees that it is best if we adopt him since we do everything for him. Father is absent and doesn't care. Thanks.

Even an uncontested adoption involves a lot of legal procedures and would be very hard to do without a lawyer.
Here's a link to a good Texas A&M site that discusses adoption and other alternatives:

I would suggest that perhaps people are more reluctant to adopt children when lawyers and a huge legal process is involved. So, instead, they make the process as routine as possible performing all the extensive background checks.

Why would you need to have a lawyer adopt your grandson?

Surely it would be better to retain a lawyer to help YOU adopt him!

Default Update

I've went ahead and retained a lawyer. We are now in the process of doing criminal background checks and a home study. I've started another localized thread if anybody is interested. Thanks!
