I think anyone who wants to build a ranch should do it in the Hill Country. It just offers a really good setting for whatever home you decide on, and a true Texas feel to it.

A few acres but not isolated. I want some neighbors around me and be able to get to the city within an hour or less. Preferably less! I want lots of trees. A pool. Four bedrooms, one of which would be a den or computer room. A fireplace. Oh, and the rooms don't have to be very large but not cramped either. Brick with some stone. As to where? I wouldn't mind out by Weatherford where my husband would prefer but I was thinking maybe East Texas.
Just think, in East Texas, how about a stone-and-brick combination surrounded completely by pine trees?? That would be a fantastic place to do it.

I'm always fascinated by the terrain and structure of that part of the Hill Country near Boerne. You should be able to find some good vistas nearby. Spanish would not be a bad idea and you should have really good landscaping.

Do any of you like a Spanish villa design? Have you ever wanted one for your type of dream home?

Does Spanish Villa mean Spanish Colonial/Mediterranean? White stucco, rounded doorway arches, courtyards...and red tile roof?

If that is what you mean, yes....I love the style.

Pretty much. They all fit the same basic category and I think they are exquisite.

They are also expensive to build....but that has always been one of my favorites.

Where: If I were bound to build in Texas, instead of Palm Springs or along the Caribbean/South Pacific aquamarine, I'd choose Fort Worth [Rivercrest Country Club/ museum district]; Midland [Racquet Club/Old Midland];Austin [Tarrytown/Emma Long Park area:Farview Road; Hill Country, perhaps]; San Angelo [on Concho River/Park Street]; or Alpine vicinity [on removed ranch with flowing spring].

Style: Early Frank Welch Texas Regional; Jack Arnold elegant; or traditional cottage aesthetic. Link I might be persuaded to go ultra-modern (broken link). Absolutely NO street visible vent stacks or front-loading garages!!! Lots of street trees. See this post. An outdoor, under-the-sky shower and an enclosed courtyard with a pool or an infinity pool surrounded on three sides with a view if a hilly or remote site. See Commercial>Costa Rica and Commercial> Pools

Materials: I like brick, cut limestone, stone, smooth stucco, and, rammed earth/ceramic, and concrete. Home would be LEED certified Platinum and zero-energy, powered by innocuous photovolaic roof tiles. No carpeting anywhere in the home, save for a Persian rug, perhaps. Hoseable floors. Floating cabinets and appliances. Built to clean and stay clean and healthy [Baubiologie/ Non-toxic, Natural, and Earthwise] as well as being fire/ tornado proof.

Some reading this thread might enjoy The Great Home Design Show with Brent Hull which airs Sundays on WBAP 820 AM[Listen Live on internet and to archived shows].

What a wonderful, stimulating thread! The first part of any dream coming true, is putting words to it. I have enjoyed reading through the many dreams tonight.

For me, if money were absolutely no object, I would love to have an italian style house in Boerne on about 40 acres with solar and wind power, deep well, work shop and greenhouse. PLUS a business in town offering jobs to people in need of beneficial employment, and a foundation to administer the whole thing.

Thanks for the space to dream! JD
