Not so strange. In most parts of the state, Mesquites are just invasive weeds. Since they are not really native they don't tell you much about the local climate.

Saw a 40 foot mesquite in Houston. That was strange.

Mesquites are native to both Texas and much of North America in general.

And yes, they are considered invasive pests. The wood is beautiful for furniture. I wish I could afford a mesquite dining table, but they are heavy and $$$$$!

I hate mesquite. Don't even use it to smoke my meat!

LOL We agree on something. However, I have used it to smoke meats and it is also good to use in the fireplace, especially when getting the fire first going since it burns hotter than oak.

Other than that, mesquite is nothing but a PITA and big-time! If it has gotten a foothold on a place, it will simply take over if it is not kept cut out and poisoned and it is a continuous job keeping it under control.

I don't like it so blazing hot you can barely breathe, but I'm not fond of freezing temps either. But if freezing weather could kill out the mesquites, I'd say bring it on and blast them out!

Check this guy out.

Wim Hof - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He climbed Everest in just shorts and sandals. Supposedly there is nothing unusual about his body, he just uses meditation to withstand the cold. I am going to read his book so I can learn to stop worrying and love winter.
