hi guys,

i have a trip coming up this week for my job where ill have to drive to midland for an event. out of all of the places ive traveled, ive never been to midland before, or that area for that matter. which is the quickest and smoothest route to take from austin? im actually driving from houston but i see a stretch that shows highway 87 from austin to midland as a possibility. if thats too long, ill prob just consider doing interstate 10 most of the way.

thanks in advance for any insight!

I drove from New Orleans to Midland once. I went from New Orleans to Houston to San Antonio then I-10 to 349 to Midland. I don't know if that is the best way though.

Use GOOGLE MAPS - DIRECTIONS, and type in your two points - Austin and Midland - and you'll be given the shortest/quickest route plus alternate routes.

last time I went I went I-20 to US 87 in Big Spring to San Angelo and hit 71 in some town I think Brady but don't quote me.I went that way to avoid that death trap otherwise known as 158.Also, another way is some road I think 290 to I-10 then get off at Ozona and take 137 to 158.Conversely, you could hit 83 at Junction and take it to Eden until you hit 87.

Lol. Oh my... Well I'm actually traveling from Houston and obviously google maps was the first thing I did. Thank you for the response but theres about 3-4 routes to choose from. Not easy like your try to make it sound.

Thank you all for the response. Everybody's reply was different and helpful.

Western, what's this 158 death trap about?

Tx09, thanks for that route. That's what I was thinking instead of i10 but wondered whether theres a lot of lights in small towns that might slow me down. Lookin for the fastest route. Thank you again

hey Easton......well there's lots of oil field traffic on 158 and its 2 lane and there is road work. There has been fatalities on that road due to the oil boom. Its just notoriously dangerous in my area.Netime.

Responses from me and others were based on the subject of this thread you began, and your opening remarks, to wit: "which is the quickest and smoothest route to take from austin?"

He's right--the oilfield traffic has made it pretty miserable at times--impossible to pass, dust, etc. But it's not only 158--it clogs all of 'em now.

I used to drive it all of the time, but I broke it up at Ozona. I'd still probably drive the same route today.

The more you can use I-10--generally--you will save time because of the much higher speed limits. Otherwise, you have slowdowns, turns, etc.
