Good way to put it. My own simple-minded philosophy of being a gun owner in the realm of personal protection, and keeping them in the house and carrying in legal circumstances boils down to this: I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

It's better than nothing, but a little small for what I would want to carry. But like I said, it's better than a rock

Good line!

.38special or 9mm is as small as I'd go! Get a .357mag and use the .38spc rounds for practice! .357mag in 125 grain HP is THE accepted round (pistol) for self defense.

Here is ammo info you can chew on:

I don't think anyone wants to get shot with anything, even a .25 ACP. But I think .380 and .38 Spc are a good lower limit, especially if the target might shoot back. I've heard that the .22 Magnum rimfire is fairly damaging because of its high velocity.

Love that last sentence and so profound. The same can be said about my fingernail clippers and attached nail file. Right now, it's the only "defense" I choose to have.

I have learned a lot from this thread. I have a small .22 that I keep in my nightstand, but it looks like I might need to upgrade. The reason I have never bought a shotgun is because of the perceived kickback. I have never shot one, so just how bad is the kickback (with a buckshot)? I'm not a big person, so I don't want something that will knock me down. Home invasions are certainly on the rise lately, and it's not to be taken lightly.
