I think, good or bad cultural shock may depend on your life experiences and what you've heard or believe, if anything, about the area. Just many have posted on here, what they have experienced moving to many places in Texas.

do many people commute from Houston to Huntsville? Would that be a bad commute?

Huntsville has pretty much become the northern edge of the Houston Metroplex. When driving south from Huntsville, it is becoming a strip city down the freeway.

You will have to get used to 'East Texas time' when it comes to getting things done, a little slower than the big city. You get out and get things done in the morning when cooler, chill out in the afternoon when the heat sets in.

It will be a big change from Flint. But all the big city stuff is available in Houston, about 1.5 hours south, including top museums, broadway shows, etc. And you will find the growth and activity quite a refreshing change from Detroit.

There are many people that commute from Houston to Huntsville. Many of them are students at Sam Houston State. But there is a limit. I doubt anyone south of The Woodlands is commuting there but I'm sure there are many people in Conroe, Willis, and New Waverly making the commute.

I went to college in Hunstville and it is fantastic place to live. If there were more career opportunities in Huntsville I probably would have stayed. The town is very affordable in my opinion. As mentioned anything you can not find here is a short drive away. The thing I miss the most is the weather. A great balance of not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. Also, there are great breezes and starry nights.

I would not worry about the prisons. Any stereotypes about the prison are way overblown. Do you really think hard working and caring parents would send their kids off to college in a "dangerous" place?

I am 5 months from retirement and live in southwest Houston area. Been to Huntsville number of times and like what I see. Any specific negatives for a retired person living there? The college must bring a number of cultural programs and lectures during the school year, right? Thanks in advance. Regards

I was considering moving there myself. I went to visit the university recently to inquire about working there. A high school friend is pretty high up, so he gave me a tour of the school and town and introduced me to a lot of Sam Houston employees. He and I come from a small town, so our perspectives will be similar. He likes it there a lot. Yes there are cultural events with the university. Like a symphony, speakers, festivals at the university and in downtown, etc. Plus the university is growing and pushing to make a lot of changes.
