We are buying a new house which has wooden electrical pole in its backyard. However, the pole is just next to the fence. Is there a way to bring in the fence a little which will decrease our lot size but we r ok with a little small backyard rather than having a backyard with that pole in it.. Plz share any info u have regarding decreasing the lot size in a legal way. I need the answer as soon as possible, Thanks

I had this situation with my first house, which I still own as a rental property. With a little landscape screening, its hardly noticeable.

You can move the fence in but I would not recommend that. There is no real practical way to decrease the lot size and its probably not a good idea to do so. Given the utility pole it is highly likely that there is a 5' utility easement all along the rear property line, this is very common, and moving the fence into the middle of the easement could conflict with utilities.

In many areas the size of house you are allowed to build and the amount of paving you can put on the lot is limited by the total lot size, so its not a good idea to reduce it. Instead just plant some tall shrubs to screen the pole and you will never have to look at it. Plants such as clumping bamboo, or photinia (which easily can grow 12' tall) are a few options that come to mind.

Please DO NOT plant bamboo in the ground!!! That stuff spreads like wildfire, and it is impossible to kill! If you want a privacy screen, use the photinias.

Please pay attention, I suggested "clumping bamboo". It does not spread like many other types of bamboo.
