I've got this grass/weed starting to invade my St. Augustine lawn. Anyone know what it is and how to get rid of it without killing my grass. In this photo you can see my still wonderfully green St. Augustine (a rarity this time of year in Central Texas). This stuff is getting worse every week.

I'm not sure to be honest but be very careful about what you put down to kill it. A lot of lawn pesticides will attack St Augustine grass...viewing it as a broad leaf weed. So once you identify the invading grass, talk with someone who knows lawn care about picking the right product to remove it without harming your existing St Augustine grass. If by chance you do accidentally put down the wrong weed control product...water the heck out of your yard for a 2-3 days or more.

Bermuda grass? It spreads really quickly.

Default Bahia

That is Bahia Grass. Easy to control with herbicides. There are some good products that target that grass, just do a Google search for 'Bahia Grass Herbicide'. It is tenacious once it gets in your grass. I eradicated that from my lawn by letting it grow long, especially after good rains, then grabbing the long stalks and pulling them out. The problem with mowing the stems is that you are just spreading the seeds, unless you bag your clippings. Else, the herbicides should do the trick; it does not kill the seeds, but it does kill the grass though. Ha! That is why I pulled that crap out of my lawn whenever I saw it growing.

It looks a lot like Bahia grass but is much shorter and the seeds are white, not black. I have a few small spots of what is definitely Bahia out front. This has been around a few weeks now and has never gotten as tall or looked quite like it.

Honestly, I would just mow it and let it go. I am absolutely not hung up on having a immaculate green San Augustine lawn.

Call one of the professional lawn care companies that come out with the trucks, fertilizer, etc (tru-Green comes to mind) and let them handle it if it is important to you.

Looks like Johnson Grass. It is an invasive and has white seeds. I would just pull it for now unless you have a lot of it. They I would look at a herbicide. The only problem with the herbicide is it does not discriminate as much as you might think.

Mow, mow, mow. And when the stems get long enough - before the seed tops sprout, mow again. Or as the Hooked Up Brother says, grab the stems and chop.

Johnson grass or goose grass ? That's what it looks like to me. My neighbors lawn is that. The grass lost the battle so the lawn company just mows it down and edges. Isn't this the time of year, as well as, the spring time when the weeds go to seed ?

I've sprayed herbicide on most of it. Large brown (dead) spots and patches now. Since we're so late in the season here in Texas, I plan to eradicate and reseed in the spring. Did the same a couple years ago with other weeds and had success.
