I work for a national construction corporation as a cement mixer driver. I'm getting bored with the Class B driving and want to drive Class A for them. For months there have been driver jobs posted in Stockton CA, Bryan TX, and Beaumont TX. It's become obvious the jobs are not being taken. After reading Forbes' review, and City-Datas' Forum regarding Stockton CA, it was a no brainer why the jobs are going begging. What is the skeleton in Beaumonts' closet?

I've read that area of TX got hit much harder than Houston in the 1980s oil crash.

I see; perhaps it's the TX version of Bayonne NJ? Ugh!

Beaumont pretty much is the Stockton of Texas. Dirty, decaying, high crime, and a shrinking population. Nearby Port Arthur is even worse. Beaumont feels like a Southern version of a rustbelt town.

Humid, swampy and blighted. Some of the nicest, most peculiar people you'll meet in all of Texas. The best accents and some of the best food. Beaumont-Port Arthur isn't an easy place to live, but there's a soul to it most people just won't get.

If you have any tolerance and/or interest in Deep South and Cajun culture at all, then go for it. For the times you just have to get away, you're an hour from Houston and three hours from New Orleans.

I believe BMT and Port Arthur are doing well economically right now. They were in a small economic boom before getting smacked by two hurricanes, and things were bad for a while. But a good portion of the area is ugly and industrial. Ill second that good food is a big deal to people there, however. If you ever watched True Detective, there is one episode that takes place in a Beaumont housing project that is grimly accurate. But yes there are plenty of nice places there as well. High school football is religion there.

Beaumont would be a better place to live than Stockton because of the much lower COL, but its also a town that has its share of problems...mostly crime & pollution. Its better than Stockton though.

Don't move there with your kids ... you'd want to live in an outlying school district. Beaumont ISD has had all kinds of illegal activities, missing monies, and has had the district management taken over by the state.

Beaumont ISD Raided by FBI

I work in Beaumont but live 50 miles away. The ghetto parts of the town are a decaying rustbelt but there are plenty of nice parts. I consider it (Beaumont) a mini-Houston.

I'm assuming he's single with no kids. People don't usually uproot their families in hopes of curing boredom in Beaumont, Texas.
