Biggs AFB. B-52s used to take off right over our house in the early 60's. I loved it as a kid, but it must have gotten on the nerves of adults in the area. They were incredibly loud. Also regularly saw CH-21 Shawnee helicopters (Flying Bananas). Not sure if they were based at Biggs or Ft. Bliss -- the bases were right next to each other.

Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth. (I still count Carswell because the name and military service branch changed.) When I was a teenager, I used to work summers for my uncle who owned a landscaping business. His firm received the landscaping contract for Ridgmar Mall when it was under construction.

We were practically under the flight path of the big B-52s that were stationed there. Once you hear the roar of a B-52 taking off directly overhead, you'll never forget it. In a conversation? Might as well stop and wait for 30 seconds, because no one will hear a thing that's said.

How about the Marfa Army Airfield. The outline of the runways can be seen on Google Earth, right across the fence from the Marfa Mystery Lights viewing area on hwy. 90, 9 miles east of Marfa.

When I was little in the 1960s, one set of grandparents lived outside Austin past Bergstrom AFB. I remember there was a golf course and housing units visible from the highway as well as the large, circular building that's now the airport hotel. The ghost of the old golf course is still visible but everything else was removed when the new Austin Airport took over the land.
