My husband and I have just finished out enlistment and are looking to move back to Texas with our new baby. We are looking for a safe place to live that will be good to raise a family. There needs to be a college or university within reasonable distance. I've been looking into Huntsville, Lufkin, & Longview. I would prefer a place that has a crime rate of at least 20.

Also any good townhome communities that are reasonably priced and in a good area? I've looked into a few but am limited with Google. Thanks!

Lufkin or Nacogdoches. Still easy day trip to Houston (occasionally). I live an hour south of Lufkin near Woodville.

Huntsville has become a suburb of Houston. Lufkin, Nacogdoches are nice communities, but jobs can be an issue.

Lol Lufkin or Nacogdoches? I'd say it's Nac easily.

I second the Tyler area - we have UT Tyler, and are close but not too close to DFW as well as Shreveport, with very easy access to I-20. Tyler's overall economy is very robust and healthy. The housing market is very diverse and prices are reasonable. Many good schools for children, both public and private. The bedroom communities surrounding the city of Tyler are also very pleasant with good schools - Whitehouse, Fint, Gresham, Chandler, Lindale, Chapel Hill, just to name a few.

You say a crime rate of atleast 20(i'm assuming that means under the national average or a little above it) and a university or college? You're best bet is Nacogdoches or Huntsville. Nac has SFA and Huntsville has Sam Houston both decent size colleges/ universities. Both towns are fairly safe and small.

Tyler, large Junior College, 10,000 plus with many medical related two year programs, and great prep for any four year college/university as they call themselves today, lol. UT Tyler is up to 8,000 enrollment, with the only Pharmacy School in East Texas including Sam Houston, SFA and many other degree programs.

Live close by to Tyler, where you have the Only Level One hospital in East Texas and the true medical center of East Texas. The largest shopping financial center of East Texas. Plus many things to do for town its size. Best to you !
