Texas - Great for business, bad for kids

Texas called one of the 10 worst states to be a kid - Houston Chronicle

Texas was declared the 43rd worst state to raise a kid, according to a report this week.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation looked at data about the 7 million kids who call Texas home, and revealed some startling statistics. (See the comprehensive report here)

The Lone Star State has the second-highest rate of uninsured children in the nation, totaling 13 percent in 2013. A quarter of the state’s children lived below the poverty line in 2013. Moreover, more than a quarter of the state’s kids (1.9 million) are “food-insecure” – where families often “choose between food and other necessities.”

The study determined Texas’ ranking by examining the state’s economic well-being, health, education, family and community. Massachusetts topped the list. Mississippi finished last.

So, if you have the means and decide to move to Texas your kids suddenly lose their insurance, and become poor and starve to death?

What a misleading title.

I think they call them "entitlements" now. Makes a handier catch phrase on election years.

The article should have said instead worst state for low income family to raise a kid.

Luckily we don't give out welfare benefits like other states.

What about it?

There is unemployment/ Medicaid.

One of my sons has been laid off three times in 22 years due to closures of the businesses or divisions. He went out and got a new job each time.
