I don't think that death is a laughing matter regardless of how it happened. The dude was young and most likely lit off his ass, but he was still loved by someone.

I think that the movies have desensitized us to death and peril, so we tend to forget that it is a very real and scary thing. I don't think he was any dumber than the bulk of the population that drives irresponsibly. We don't laugh at fatal car accidents, though.

It was poached.

Either way, don't we put down dogs that harm humans? They don't think they're doing anything wrong, either.

Not totally eaten. Parts of him were missing and later found in the gators GI tract.

Alligator in deadly attack shot and killed - Houston Chronicle

The dead man may have been loved by someone but was obviously dim witted. This condition (being stupid) leads to death in many persons. I am neither sad nor glad. I just consider the gene pool improved very slightly!

Gotta know your gators ... they eat more in warm weather and are territorial when guarding their nests. These are the times they might be dangerous.

Yes, he was from St. Louis, according to a news report I read. It seems he only recently came to the area with his twin brother to work in the shipyards.

Well, MO is the 'show me' state, but what bad timing to be enforcing that sobriquet. Hopefully, his twin brother learns from this sad occurrence.

I was always told that alligators go out of the way to avoid people when possible. Of course if you try to cozy up to one, then all bets are off. I wonder if this guy simply landed on or near the alligator when he jumped in.

This was in the news article I read. . . .

The reptile could have been startled early Friday or was possibly protecting its habitat, Enmon said.

Authorities said alligators in the area had also been displaced by recent heavy rain which, combined with the fact that they're in breeding season, could make them more territorial

I don't know about them avoiding people. When canoeing down the lower Guadalupe, you will see HUNDREDS of gators. Most of the time, they will just ignore you. At dusk or after dark, they get more active and will swim toward you to 'check you out' (maybe to see if you fit in their mouth?), but rarely get very close. Since most are of the 3-5' variety, they really aren't much of a threat and you aren't interesting to them as food. In the main waterway, you are not likely to be encroaching on their territory, either, so I doubt they would attack your boat, either. Anyway, I wouldn't say they avoid you, but they don't really bother with you.

The fact that it has apparently been 100+ years since the last gator death speaks volumes to how non-aggressive they are....

The man sealed his own fate. Hopefully others learn by his stupidity.

The alligator just acted in self defence to prevent from being raped as the man clearly announced what he was going to do before jumping in.

Justice was done, case closed.
