I'm Leaving Tucson with my large dog and want to make a midway overnight stop on my way to San Antonio. I'm looking for suggestions of places to stop/stay? From there, the final destination is Tampa. I want to drive about 8 hours a day and am looking for a dog friendly town to stroll and dine when stopping for the night.
Thanks for any suggestions!

I recommended lots of stuff but edited after I realized you mentioned 8 hours lol. I'd say fort stockton. I preferred the size of that place and the hotels more so than van horn. Both aren't make or break it type decisions.

If you're going to make the trip in 2 days, why not spend the night in El Paso the first night, then in San Antonio the 2nd? You'll have a lot more options regarding places to stay and eat.

Then the trip from San Antonio to Tampa can be done in two roughly 8 hour days as well from San Antonio to Baton Rouge or Mobile, AL area, and then from there to Tampa.

FYI, last time I did this route, I10 speed limit was 80 or 85 during daytime but only 65 at night so be sure to hit it during daytime. The higher limit starts east of El Paso about 80 miles and ends around kerrville.

No such thing as different night speed limits in Texas anymore (no different truck speed limits anymore either). They were eliminated in the 2011 legislative session.

Good to know my last trip was in 2009 and the slow night limit caught me and was a real pain, the 85 vs 65 mph in place then was huge.

For a time, it was very difficult to find a reasonable room around Fr. Stockton and other towns along I10 in West Texas due to the Fracking Boom. I am not sure if that is still the case.
