I would say dirty sixth is worth a visit, but these days there is way more to downtown Austin nightlife than that stretch of 6th: Rainey Street, Warehouse District, 2nd Street, and east east 6th are very lively without being as crazy.

You could be a bit more specific. What kind of bars/clubs/music? What kind of food?

Austin may seem like the easy answer, but it may not be the best answer. Contrary to popular opinion, it isn't for everyone.

For the things you mentioned Austin. But if you want a true life experience go to Big Bend National Park in far West Texas. You will forget the cities but you will never forget Big Bend.

Not really. My coworker was up there for July 4th and got sucker punched by a random guy outside a bar. He is a very quiet guy and makes zero trouble. The puncher just walked off and left my friend with a broken jaw in two places.

Meh. He's 21 years old. Most 21 year olds vacation in cities.

One example doesnt prove anything. Downtown Austin is extremely safe considering the number of bars and alcohol flowing around.

I know this. Just saying it can happen. I lived in Austin from 2000-2009 during the prime of my party days and saw fights everytime I went to 6t Street. Good thing this was the same time when the Warehouse District and West 6th was really getting going and you could avoid dirty 6th completely.
