it just dawned on me the other day..i have lived here since October, and am from North Texas (between Wichita Falls and Ft Worth) and spent last year (the year from hell...i call it my "hell tour" in South Texas....

there are no oil rigs here! no pump jacks. no signs with the words "roustabouts". no "roughnecks".

i MISS seeing pump jacks!!!!!!!!!! now i am wondering how far i have to drive to see pump jacks-how far north before i see the first sign of pumpjacks? how far west? anyone know?

if Central Texas/Hill Country had pumpjacks, it would be the PERFECT place. to me, it's just such a "true Texas symbol"

Yikes, I hate those things. Actually, you will find a few here and there in the Central Texas area with that Barnett Shale thing going on. Of course, it's nothing like of which you speak.

Head down to Luling for your oil rig fix. Not all that far, really, and you can eat some of the best BBQ in Texas at the same time!

We have some here around Abilene, Belle. And a lot of the NEW Texas symbol -- wind turbines, LOL. Be proud to know that Texas now has THE largest wind farms in the country!

Actually, how far are you from Abilene, Belle? I just took some friends from Canada who were visiting down to Fredericksburg for the day. It's a 3-hour drive (one way) from Abilene to Fredericksburg.

Ah, OK. We're about an hour and a half from Stephenville. Straight down I-20, LOL.

I think they call the oil guys here "wildcatters." ABC News did a feature on one here in Abilene on their Nightline program!

We live less than three hours from Bellestar here in Abilene. I drive through the Lampasas, Copperas Cove, Killeen area frequently. Last week, I was in that area less than three hours after I left Abilene.

They have the little "grasshoppers" in Tyler. In fact, they just discovered some black gold on my grandmas land and are going to put one on it.

I couldn't help singing this to myself after reading your post!

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Texas Tea.

Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said Jed move away from there
Said Californy is the place you ought to be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.

Hills, that is.
Swimmin pools, movie stars.

The Beverly Hillbillies!

Well now its time to say good-bye to Jed and all his kin.
And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in.
You’re all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality

Hillbilly that is. Set a spell. Take your shoes off. Y'all come back now, y'hear?
