Whole discussion seems silly.

The economic development of DFW was not caused by combining the two into one metropolitan statistical area. That's just nuts. It was caused by tax policies, labor rates, cost of land, tax incentives given by municipalities and the state, the building of the airport, and hundreds of other factors both intentional and unintentional.

All three areas will continue to be one metro area and there there's no going back. The metro is one built-out area so it will create a big mess if it were to be divided. Below are just a few places that encompass 2 or more counties. Would one part have to keep the city name and the others renamed to N Dallas, West Grand Prairie, West Frisco, etc. or would one part of a particular city be in one metro and the other parts in another?

City - Counties
Dallas - Dallas, Collin, Denton, Rockwall, Kaufman
Grand Prairie - Dallas, Tarrant, Ellis
Richardson - Dallas, Collin
DFW Airport - Dallas, Tarrant
Grapevine - Dallas Tarrant
Plano - Collin, Denton
Frisco - Collin, Denton
Carrollton - Collin, Dallas
Sachse - Collin, Dallas
Coppell - Dallas, Denton

DTXman34, youre arguing over semantics. Even if they were two separate metro areas (there is no way in hell Frisco and Plano would divide off of Dallas) none of this would change anything in the real world. The area would still function as it does today. Arbitrary lines change nothing.
