What is it like for a white American who doesn't speak Spanish to move to Laredo or Brownsville? These places seem to have low crime.

Generally fine. Probably the most different thing is to make sure you don't speed. The State dropped a ton of DPS troopers in the Valley to act like they were doing something about illegal immigration when all DPS really can do is traffic stops. Recent data suggests that they've been discriminatory in stops. As a result any white dude doing anything should expect to get pulled over so they can try to even the numbers up.

I don't know a lot about either place, but I've spent some time in Brownsville. It's not a place where you just randomly move. Do you have a job lined up? And a rudimentary understanding of Spanish is important.

Laredo does have low crime. Dont believe the hype. Its crime rate is only slightly above the national average. Its crime rate is lower than Waco, Killeen, Beaumont, Abilene, and Tyler (source City Data).

So yes, Laredo is safe.

It's violent crime rate is very low and has been for some time. 13th lowest city in the U.S. in 2013. Considering all the cities that are lower are wealthy, suburbs, or heavily military or two or three of these it's pretty fascinating. There was a big push when the border stuff happened a few years ago because it almost destroyed their economy. If you adjusted for income and education it'd probably be lowest or second lowest.

The FBI source, the link you provided above, shows a much different picture, RATES?

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s...decpdf/table-6

I only looked at the first category, violent crime, the rates are higher for Laredo, just saying, again I did not look across all categories and add and divide for an "average of all crimes rate"
