I was reading an old article in Texas Monthly that argued that we need a new state song so I wanted to get y'alls opinion. Currently it's "Texas Our Texas." The writer claimed that since no one knows the words to the song anyways and it's hard to sing we should choose a new state song.

Why don't people know the words to the song? In 5th grade, our music teacher made us memorize how to play it on the recorder and many moons later, my fingers still know how to play it. My kids are in 3rd and Kinder, and I've been teaching my 3rd grader how to play it on the recorder.

What? I moved to Texas in 1979 and remember singing it in Elementary School. I am now 46 and spent many years outside the state, but I still have it committed to memory...

I suppose you're going to tell me they don't use that ginormous brown Texas history book in 7th grade anymore, either....

I learned Texas our Texas as well in Elementary school. I even remember the Texas History text book our school utilized had the lyrics printed before the table of contents.

I would be ok with changing it to All My Exes Live in Texas, but only that song.

La Grange (ZZ Top)?
Prairie Rose (Roxy Music)?

I think of rock n roll when I think of the state, not the yee-haw twang-alang stuff.

One blog post I read (can't remember where) suggested the newer version of The Cotton Eyed Joe. I think that's a better choice fo official Texas dance. Apparently the official state dance is the square dance which is lame since almost half of the states have that as their state dance.

Do you mean the Bull $hit song or the Rednex song?
