I am looking for a warm place to live where the cost of living is low.

I am looking at Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, etc. Would San Antonio be definitely cheaper than Houston to live? That's what I thought but when I searched the cost for one room studio, all three cities were in the $600s per month, so I guess there really isn't much of a difference for cost of living.

I always heard San Antone was the cheapest major city in Texas but I dont know how cheap El Paso is.I hear Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington area is getting pricey.I think Houston is cheaper than Dallas but I am not for sure.I would just go where you can find a job,OP.

Thanks.
Can you live without a car in SA?
Houston being much bigger than SA, what can you expect to miss out on by choosing to live in SA as opposed to Houston?

I would San Antonio overall, then outer loop Houston, the further out you go the cheaper it gets, then Dallas and last Austin. Although I don't know about the outskirts of Austin and how cheap it gets.

Area outside of Austin are getting pricier by the day. The Hill country in general is getting to be high end.

Wow, is it getting that unaffordable? Sad. Too many people moving in, not enough supply? I'd figure the supply of housing would increase and keep pace with influx like all other Texas cities.

I think it's just that generally speaking, all booming metro areas are going to be more expensive than smaller, slower paced metro areas. It's not that there's a lack of housing - it's just that owners of land or houses or developments are going to sell them for whatever people are willing to pay.

And Austin is a hot market. So people are willing to pay more. That's all. I don't think there's any lack of supply.

Except for water. Honestly. When my husband and I were seriously considering the Hill Country we ran into that issue several times. Now granted that was a few years ago during a big drought, but a big drought is going to happen in that area again..and again...and again.

That's a shame because it's such a beautiful area.

Uh, if you're finding $600/mo studios in Dallas, they are NOT in safe neighborboods. The median rent for a 1-bedroom is $1200/mo-ish. You should budget $850+ for a studio in a safe area.

Yes, COL in San Antonio is a lot less than in Dallas or Houston.

I was amazed looking at house prices in San Antonio recently.

My little 1000 sq foot house near Austin is worth nearly $200k, and I could sell it in a week.

I could get a 1400+sq foot new build for under 200k, or a nice few years old house for 180k.

If wife lands job with the VA, we would move down there in a hurry.
