Whatever county you speak of in South Texas down by the border, trust me, it's not "liberal." They just hate Donald Trump.

When yuppie liberals talk about liberal cities in their mags they usually look for food co-ops, LGBT friendly establishments, and other things crunchy. They rarely look at things that a city such as Houston already has such an extensive network of community and public health facilities to help out people who lack the funds for healthcare, affordable housing initiatives, better social services for people in need and public housing. You know things that matter to working people when in need?

I think it's cus Houston is a working class, minority majority blue collar Democrat city sort of like Detroit (minus the union power) that it doesn't get the title of being "liberal" because it lacks that kitschy urban professional yuppie feel white liberals like.
Houston and Dallas have a lot of Hispanics and Blacks, who again, aren't the white guilt activist liberals you will find in Austin or Portland. Look at the demographics and voting %. Austin is less diverse, but votes more democratic.

Once again, you are comparing a city to an entire state. That just doesn't work, Austin and Fresno are nothing alike.

How about the GOP? The GOP has been taken over by Southern Religious Right fanatics since the '80s and ran off the moderates to the Democratic Party. It's no longer small government here, all the legislation has been filtered through the screen of Dominionist Evangelical Christianity erecting their beliefs as law!

Why are you giving the GOP a pass?

Houston's liberals do share the same progressivism as the "crunchies" you deride. Probably because everyone (yuppies and minorities) needs to be united to stand against the GOP's increasingly tyrannical power grab in this state.

I'm not denying any of that just that it's usually white liberal types that tend to define what progressivism is and they tend to look at stuff that seems superficial or they tend to mostly look at stuff like social issues or environmental issues. Economic issues seem almost in the background when it was the primary cause of the early progressives. They don't look at a working class minority-majority blue democrat city like Houston, with it's somewhat stronger social programs, housing assistance, and healthcare initiatives as progressive. They want to see more vegan co-ops, tech startups, LGBT friendly, and liberal cultural vibe. Even though Austin's actual assistance programs to working people may be poorer than Houston's and most of things available are community stuff.

So that always annoys me when people are just knee jerk about how "right wing" Houston is and how "liberal" Austin is. Houston also has a city owned company corp that guides some of the economic development and funding for the arts. So even at creating culture Houston's scene is subsidized by the government.

That's why I think the liberal yuppie and their crunchy culture of deciding what's truly liberal is just hyped garbage. If Austin doesn't even compare to Houston, then it doesn't even compare to real progressive cities such as Seattle, SF, Portland and NYC.
