I hear its a higher crime area but you should be fine as long as you stay away from drugs and the wrong crowd.

How are you looking? I don't know about Dallas but do NOT use Craigslist for real estate of any kind in Austin, it is FULL of frauds, scams, and outdated info. Seriously, it is a cesspool.

To look at Austin real estate, use Austin home search (all one word) dot com.

DeSoto is one of the bigger southern suburbs of Dallas. It's schools are below average and has a less educated population than many other suburbs - i.e., only about a quarter of DeSoto residents have a college degree. Population is majority black. Housing princes are lower than average for the DFW area (see below average schools). I would call it a typical working class suburb, similar to Mesquite or Grand Prairie. Crime rate has fallen dramatically over the last decade (mirroring national and local trends).

If you really like Austin and are good with a suburb, you may consider looking into Buda or Kyle just South of Austin or Cedar Park, Pflugerville or Round Rock just North of Austin.... All, good places to be.

I'm renting a house in Irving (moved in a few weeks ago) for $1400 (3 bed one bath) I had to use a realtor to get it before it went on market. It was the 5th rental house I toured. Its in a nice and safe working/middle class neighborhood built in the mid 50s, but the schools aren't all that great from what I hear.

I highly doubt you will find anything bigger than an Apartment in a good school district under $1500.
